What is swaddling and is it necessary?
Your baby spent the better part of a year enveloped in a warm, dark environment. Coming out into the world is a big change! In order to help baby ease into this new environment, it is helpful to keep them securely wrapped - especially during sleep time. It mimics the womb and also aids in keeping their temperature constant. Infants are not able to regulate their body temperature so it is imperative that we keep them covered and warm. I have learned a great technique for swaddling using a simple muslin blanket. This technique is different than what most hospitals teach and does a great job keeping baby snuggled and unable to “break out” of the swaddle. It is also a good idea to have other types of swaddles available as each baby has their own opinion of what feels comfortable to them.
